ok so a few months ago i got red highlights in my black hair, i still hav in it my hair, but i want blonde highlights. can i get blonde on top, or do i hav to wait till my red highlights fall out? plz helpHair highlights question... please help..?

Most people get highlights done every 3 months. It also depends on how much you have highlighted. The more chunkier the peices and the more you have highlighted allows for the roots to show more when it starts to grow out. Therefore you may have to get it done more often.

You can naturally dye your hair with lemon juice, yes. The longer you're in the sun the lighter it gets so you can control it a little. It is pretty drying though so I'd recommend using a mask or something else that will moisten your hair afterwards. you could also dye it with Camomile tea, which is a bit better for your hair :)

Well, it sounds like you have dark everything lol. You really want to brighten your eyes so cream eyeshadow is perfect because it gives a natural shine. Don't use dark blues, grays, blacks, etc. You want to use lighter or medium shades of any color. Get something caramel colored and have the hairdresser scatter the hi-lites here and there, not too heavy in any area. It will give you a more natural hi-lited look, like you've been out in the sun a lot. It isn't as drastic as standard hi-lites because it won't have as much contrast =)
I wouldn't let people judge you about your hair. If you wanted to highlight it, then do it. Don't worry about what people think.





I would suggest that you get either dark blond or caramel highlights. That way, it won't be too drastic with your black hair.

Don't even try using a store kit as it will surely turn your black hair orange. Trying to go real blonde with black hair will often look gray but you should go back to your stylist and see if she can put a non peroxide toner on it to get it to a different color. Don't mess with it yourself. A pro will know which products to use so it won't affect your dark hair. Believe me she would rather know you're unhappy and try to fix it so you are. She may charge for products but even so you should go back.I had my hair highlighted blonde....?

Stay away from store brand blonde dyes, you will end up ruining your hair. I would definitely go back to where you had your hair highlighted, and let them know that you're still not happy with the color and ask them to fix it. They should fix it for free!

No, washing your hair will not ruin anything. Highlights do NOT ';fade.'; Highlights cannot change back to brown. They can, however, get brassy (yellow or orangey), and all you need to do to prevent that is use a purple conditioner designed for blonde or highlighted hair.


Also, you don't have to wash your hair every single day.
hiya max, all you need to do is get a shower cap,you can get one in boots the chemist,or any chemist. that way you can shower with out getting your hair wet.lots of men and women use them.anyway no one will see you in the shower.
Highlights usually fade because of to much conditioner + you can get shampoos that are made to protect hair colour

no i'm in the same situation as you. just tell your stylist you want to go as blonde as possible so that it wont look weird. the best way to do this is to get heavy blonde highlights so it blends in alot better and you can go longer without your roots showing. i def wouldnt recommend just dyeing your whole head blonde, go with heavy highlights!PLEASE, ill give points if you answer my highlighting hair question!!?

Well it all depends on how light you want it to go! Just tell her exactly what YOU want! If she gives you a suggestion that you don't really like just tell her you don't want that, because you might regret it!
Usually they have a color sheet where they show you samples. Just to make sure you can bring in a picture. You have to know for yourself which you think will look better on you. I wouldn't call it a drastic change. Unless it's beach blonde then yeah it might be.

You can cut a tiny bit off to do a test and see what colour your hair would go. If you're going to a good stylist they will have some examples to show you and you can choose from there

How do you get rid of an ash color in your hair. I can't even color over my highlights?

i went to the salon and they put a meduim golden brown and it nuetralizes the highlights a bit. They still look ashy and green and are not taking any color. They tried to use two toners and now a hair dye and still I see that they are ashy.Do I need to cut them out? Ashiness or green tinge is a common occurance when you highllight or dye blonde over a brown color. In a brown color, there is green, red and yellow. In blonde, there is only yellow, so the green color is still left. The only way to prevent it is to put red color in it first, before going blonde... and the only way to get rid of it is by putting a red in it now and going back blonde again after giving it a rest for a few weeks.





NO do not cut off your hair... you can always get deep conditioning treatments if it's damaged.





Oh, also, the sun and chlorine (in swimming pools) can also cause this coloring. Avoid that by using a hair mask (can be found at the salon) and not swimming in chlorinated pools.

you need a red based color, red neutralizes green(ASH)
Usually a color with red in the base will cancel out any green tone.
Hmm...a golden brown should have helped a good bit.


I'm sure the stylists did everything they could think of - I'm MORE than sure they used a Warm color. I can think of nothing else to tone out a ashy highlight other than to bleach it a little more with an ash neutralizing bleach (Kaleidocolors works for such things) Don't even THINK of cutting out your highlights!


Go back to the salon, it may take several sessions to fix your hair. If you aren't happy, the stylist should continue to work on your hair to fix it if she didn't do it right the first time.
use a red based color but do not leave it on long other wise you will have redlights instead. i suggest going to a different stylist and having a professional do it. home color can be a disaster if your not careful.

ok---what I would do.......tricky but you can do it....apply this to towel dried hair....go get a light brown color. when you go to mix it, use 1/2 of the developer--then add water to make up the other half. this will stop the light brown color from screwing up your natural color, but will only deposit the light brown on your hilighted hair. there is only a mild developer this way and you are only getting deposit of color, not lightening. should work fine. oh yeah---if you are REALLY orangy get a light ash brown, if its not too bad, get a light natural brown. should have the hilights you want. hey----let me know how it comes out or if ya need any more help! go to the store and buy a hair dying kit. dont use hydrogen proxide or bleach. bleach is wayyyy too strong to use like that on your hair and it would damage it even more than the regular dye would. you could just go to a salon though.

Highlighting your hair may seem like a reasonable solution to your premature graying, but overall it is not going to solve your problem without causing problems of its own. When you highlight the hair you will either have to have it pulled through a frosting cap or ';foiled'; which doesn't require a cap, but the separation of individual hair strands for the application of bleach. Both techniques will provide you with beautiful highlights, but they require a great deal of maintenance. That maintenance requires that you see a stylist every 6 weeks to do touch-ups so that the highlights don't result in ';roots';, a line of demarcation that makes your coloring attempt obvious to everyone. My suggestion is for you to give haircolor a try. There is a product available called ';Just for Men'; and it will only involve 5 minutes of your time to work. This product is a semi-permanent haircolor, it contains no perioxide which means it will not change your natural color at all, it will simply coat the gray hairs and make them appear much more like highlights, closer to what your hair would naturally lighten if you spent a lot of time in the sun. This product does wash out gradually and will need to be reapplied every 6 weeks, but it won't produce any dramatic changes at all, so you won't have ';roots'; to deal with, ever. They also have formulas for your facial hair, if you have any that is becoming gray. definitely do blonde hightlights, they hide the grey really well. I have dark brown hair and it really works well to do highlights.


Also, if you don't want to color, see a salon for a color stick... its a cover up for your hair that matches the color and washes out when you shower.
I'd say go to a salon-they can get you started on the right track to make it look natural and show you how to do it right by yourself.
Just go to any store to the hair colour section and pick a colour.. (no theres no diff between female %26amp; male hair dye.. no matter what the TV wants you to think.. in fact the ';for men only'; stuff is the crappier stuff..

yep, sure have, many times.


The place that I've gone to doesn't charge a full amount for the touch up at the roots, it's usually about half what I paid to start with.


Having said that....


Most salons won't go right down to the root because it can severly damage your hair and scalp so it's best to wait it out as long as possible, at least until the root is about an inch or so away from the scalp. that's just my experience others may feel differently but I just don't think it's worth the risk of damage to do it any sooner than that.Have you ever had your hair highlighted before?
If you have Foils put in than yes you will have to go threw the process each time. But if you use a cap and have it pulled threw than no. I am a natural blonde , but I do have some run threw not alot but I also don't use the same shade each time ( about every 6-8 weeks) It all depends on time of year. My hair gets a little darker in the winter. But than in the summer It really gets very light blonde on its own. In the middle of summer I don't have to even bother with it.
I did have it donw and the first week they looked lovely but as tme went on my hair went dry. It was strange.

I advise you to see a stylist, all over haircolor is fine with at home kits, but when you want to do highlights, especially that you want to go up few levels and it will require lots of peroxide it is best to have someone else do it for you. Unless you want to end up with damaged hair and uneven streaks.
You should probly go to a hair dressers, they dont charge lots for highlights, and ts even cheaper if you have sides instead of full head.

Use a wide-tooth comb and comb out sections of hair and hold them away from the rest of your head and spray them individually. If this is a temprary thing, which im sure it is, than this will probobally work. Just in case it is a permanant thing though, get it done professionally.

If you want something that is natural looking, only go a couple shades lighter than your natural color. This creates a warm ';sun-kissed'; look and prevents too much damage to your hair, especially if it is very dark.





Personally, with black hair, I like a deep red highlight or a caramel color, as long as it's not too brassy. The best thing to do is find several different pictures that you like (even if they're not all similiar, get a few choices) and take them to your stylist. She will tell you what is realistic with the color and condition of your hair, and she'll be able to suggest what would look good with your skin tone.





Also, keep in mind that the more highlights you add, the more you will need to get them touched up, so if you want them to grow out gracefully and not get them redone every 8 weeks or so, go with something natural looking and just a couple shades lighter. Also, get only the top highlighted. Usually this is less expensive, and it looks more natural because that is where the sun would naturally highlight your hair.





If you color all your hair one shade instead of getting highlights, you'll end up with flat looking color with no dimension and it won't look natural. Most likely, you will end up not liking it all one color. If you decide to have it colored lighter all over, still have them do a few highlights and lowlights to make it look natural and blend it better so it doesn't look so obviously colored when it grows out.

No, it is very very hard. I've been a stylist for 9 yrs, I can only highlight the top/front of my hair %26amp; it still doesn't turn out as good as what it should. I think it'll be a big mistake for you to try it yourself. I don't even like doing mine myself %26amp; I have lots of experience.

hey =] well if yiou want a really vibrant colour id bleach your hair first (use about 30 vol, ask the shopassistant lol, coz 40 vol is really damaging). You can use semi permanent or permanent dye and i hear manic panic is good (semi permanent). If it was the first time you've dyed your hair, it might be because your hair isn't used to the process. From what you described, it sounds like you need to condition your hair. This is what I would do if you can't get to your hairstylist/a salon within the next week or so to address the problem.





1. Since your hair is highlighted now, you want to protect that color from fading. I would find a shampoo that is made to protect the color.


2. Get a really good conditioner. However, you might want to buy a couple travel sizes of different brands if you can find them and try them. See which one works best for you because everyone's hair is different. You'll also want to deep condition at least once or twice a week.


3. If you use any kind of heat on your hair like a blow dryer or anything else, protect your hair so it won't be damaged anymore. Most brands have some kind of spray for that.





I personally like Garnier, Herbal Essences, and John Frieda. I find they work best for store bought hair care, but everyone's hair is different. It's all about what brand works best for your hair and what you can afford, so this might be a trial and error process.

You might want to try some honey low lights in your hair.A very pretty color for golden hair. I also have platinum highlights in my gold hair and I love them. When you go to the beauty shop ask them to see samples of the different hair colors they have and they may help you to choose the right color for your hair and skin type. Remember this, blonde hair gets very dirty, the color starts to look dull and dingy, use a shampoo that is specific for blonde hair after you get highlights. I use a shampoo called Shimmer Lights. I think that red her goes good with natural looking streeks and the color of strawberry blond, especially with layers, but keep it looking sifiticated and natural.

if you want a temporary look, idk if they still make them, but conair has a temporary higlight thing that washes out when you take a shower, if that helps.

i think it would look really good. just keep in mind that if you have natural blond highlights, it will take a really long time to get the pink out of your hair even if you dye over it.
I've got blonde hair and have fancied pink highlights for ages! But seen as I change my mind all the time, I bought like this pink hair gel stuff, its just as good apart from u can wash it out if u dont like it! But if u want it permenant defo get it done at a salon, although pink tends to fade quite quickly xx
The process of changing light brown hair with natural blonde highlights to vibrant pink highlights can sometimes be a tricky one. If you have naturally light brown hair, the process can be easier than if you have chemically treated light brown hair. Chemically treated light brown hair does not hold bleach as well as naturally light brown hair does.





Make very certain you know what you are getting before purchasing the dye. Try to find images of a regular person with pink highlights. I often use google Images. To make sure someone else has used the product before I you try it on your own hair, just to make sure your not getting ripped off. I personally recommend getting Paul Mitchell’s Ink Works. Since you will be highlighting it pink, I recommend getting their Red hair highlighting dye. For some reason, this dye turns pink instead of red.











You don’t need an expensive lightener or bleach, especially if you have chemically treated hair - as this will become expensive. You can even use one of those five dollar blonde hair dye kits that come in your local pharmacy or grocery store.








Follow the directions in the box of the bleach. If your hair seems to have not lightened enough, leave it in for up to ten more minutes, but no more. Even if your hair still looks dark, you can always work with it more later.








On bottles of Paul Mitchell’s Ink Works, there really are no directions, so I recommend putting it in your hair for 20 minutes or longer until the hair is the color pink you want. If you have a bottle that comes with specific directions I recommend following them.








For only highlighting pieces of hair on your head, separate the strands you wish to be pink. Pull through a cap and keep them separate from your light brown hair and bleach those strands. When you go to dye it, it’s okay to miss and get the spots next to the highlights. I recommend even covering your whole head. If your hair is light, the pink won’t show up one bit on the pieces that you are not attempting to dye.








Wash your hair in lukewarm water when you are done processing your hair. Follow it by conditioning with the deepest conditioner you can afford. Deep conditioners help lock in the dye and keep your hair silky and smooth and prevents breakage later.








If you feel your hair didn’t get the brightness you wanted it when you dyed it, a little more work is required. When your roots start to show or the pink fades after two to four weeks, bleach your hair again. If you do this, it will brighten up the parts that were a bit darker before without damaging your hair. Dye it pink again, and keep following this process until you have your entire head of hair the color you want. If you have chemically treated hair on the bottom and virgin hair at the top, I recommend dying your hair from the bottom up so that less dye is used, and the color doesn’t look uneven each time you do it.

as the person above me said manic panic at sally's otherwise this might sound scary to some people but at hot topic they have special effects hair dye it works just as fine if you can't find any manic panic. your daughters hair should be perfect if it is not to much on the brown side other wise you might need to lighten and there are bleaching kits for that.
use manic panic. it eventually washes out, just be careful with it when she's tired of it, it might not come out completely.

Don't color it, seriously is extremely hard to get it back to its original color if not impossible unless you grow it back out. Coloring really damages your hair. Maybe you should try highlights instead, it's still damaging but better than coloring your whole head.

dont color or highlight ur hair, it would just damage it. it wont be as healthy and become very dry. if u dont want to believe me than go ahead and do it.

But your hair is probably beautiful, don't ruin it by dying it. Let it stay a virgin(your hair) I put blond high lights in mine b/c i am fair skin. Don't go yellow/gold unless you want to look fake. Black hair doesn't have yellow/gold highlights when the sun bleaches it. It has reddish highlights. If you have it professionally highlighted, you could go with a pale lilac. If done properly, it will hardly be noticiable it is lilac but it will pick up the light and really shine. Depends on whether you want to enhance the color or have a bold, vibrant contrast.
as a hairdresser i would ask your stylist for lowlights. i would go up to 3 shades lighter than your natural colour which would be low maintence for the future or go for more vibrant colours like red or burgandy be careful though coz they fade very quickly and can leave your hair looking tacky.
Anything too light will make you look like a skunk or the bride of Frankenstein. How about a burgundy or deep auburn. It should show off the depth of your hair without looking stripe-y.
Caramel color.
I had red highlights, but wouldnt recommend as the dye comes out very quickly and it ends up an organge look as dark hair has to be bleached first - dont do it! I had to get it cut short eventually.
This is a tough one. i think the red tips sound nice. I had them but with my blonde hair, after washing made them look a bit ginger but with dark hair go for it! My friend has dark hair and has had pink, purple and blonde in it (not at the same time). Dont go for too much though!

If you're looking for a change, I might suggest one of those dark hair toners that doesn't change the color completely, but gives it a red, blue, maroon, etc. shine in the sun/bright light. They look really pretty on asian/hispanic/black hair. (Not sure of your ethnicity) Ask your hairstylist about them.

you should probably watch around for people who are your complexion wearing the color your thinking about. see if you like the way it looks against their complexion and it'll give you an idea if it's worth trying.





also do it on a day to which you don't have to be at a particular place like work or something the following day. this gives you the freedom to do something about it if you don't like what you've done.





finally consider what color make up you may need to switch to, color wise. sometimes you need to change the color of you lipstick and such when your hair color is different.

If you go with the golden brown streaks, I suggest that you have them looking like their natural, instead of having one spot on your hair with streaks. I say to go for the streaks, and curl it up at times.

It is hard...you could try to cover it up slightly by dying your hair a darker color ( but the highlights will still be there, just not as noticeable), or you could strip your hair and start from stratch. Whatever way you choose, I would consult with a good hair salon and let them help you fix it.

You have dark brown hair? Well, it depends on how you want your hair to look with the highlights. You could get reddish highlights if you want your hair to have a red tinge, lighter brown highlights if you want your hair to still look straight brown but just with a little flair, or you could get blondish highlights for a more stand-out look (although personally, I'm not a fan of brown hair with blonde highlights, I think it can look a bit trashy).

Naw, she's right, but it's exaggerated. Of course they wont come out. They are dyed into your hair. They are permanent. However, yeah, you should give them that long to set in because of the fact that the first few days they can fade a lot. It CAN, but doesn't usually, make a huge difference. If you can, just don't use shampoo, and always use any hair color conditioners you can, until they run out.
it should be completely fine. the only thing you shouldnt do is go swimming in a chlorine swimming pool as this will turn give your hair a green tinge. perhaps use a shampoo designed for treated hair to keep the colour vibrant?

you have to bleach the black strands you are going to highlight, then die those. Black with blond highlighs in my opinion looks like a skunk, sorry dont think it looks good or natural. If you want a highlighted look try doing a brown highlight, the contrast between the black will look a lot nicer then blond. Also the maintainance will be way harder to keep up with the lighter you go when the hair grows out it wont look very good. Ok, the trick to highlights, at least if you want them to look natural and modern, is to get them no more than 2 shades lighter than your natural hair color.


so maybe like a chestnut brown would bring some color to your face and brighten your hair up a bit for summer.


Also, you want to get them AS SMALL AS POSSIBLE, because the thinner they are the more naturally they blend in with your hair and the less obvious they are when they grow out.





Besides you just want to look naturally fabulous, not like you just walked out of a salon!!!





Remember - beware of the thick chunky skunk-like highlights and it'll be great!

i don't like the look or blonde highlights in black hair, i think its too much. If i were you, i would go a light brown or brown in your black hair, i think it would look good :)
I think dark brown highlights would look better, like a caramel color, but not blonde
I think it would be very hard to do, as black is the most difficult color to dye over
if your going for a punk look definatley go for it. But if your more girly i would leave it plain black. or with brown tips. that would look spunky.

Hey, I am going to put highlights in my hair but my mum won't allow me to bleach it coz i straighten it and she thinks it will damage it too much. I have dark blonde/light brown hair and was wondering what colours/shades I could get without bleaching my hair first???? ThxHair highlights help?
Any highlight is bleaching, obviously the lighter you go the more bleach is required and the more often you will need to get it highlighted. However there are things you can do to help relieve the negative effects of highlighting. One is don't wash your hair for a couple days before getting it highlighted, this will keep some of the natural oils in your hair and will protect if from over drying during the highlighting process. When you get your hair highlighted be sure they use conditioners after washing it out. Also, if you can, don't wash your hair for a day or two after getting the highlights. Then, whenever you wash your hair be sure to use conditioner and let it sit on your hair for a few minutes and use some type of moisturizer spray or glistening drops before you straighten your hair, this will protect it more from the heat of the straightener.

Hair highlighting help...?

I'm sixteen right now and have never gotten highlights before. However, I have dyed my hair many times. I need a little help with this though... If I dye my hair a light brownish red tonight can I go to a salon on Saturday and get blonde highlights put in or do I have to wait a month or something? If I can do it, I really want to get a lot of blonde highlights put in. Not just the little baby streaks like some people get and you can barely see them. I want it with a lot of blonde in it. Is that going to cost a lot extra than the little tiny streaks? Sorry my hair vocab isn't the greatest but I really need help with this. Thanks!Hair highlighting help...?
You will Be charged For a Full Highlight. Whether u get streaks or weaved or 5 colors it will be the same. So Call The salon and ask what a FULL highlight starting price is.. If you have TONS of hair they may charge u up to $20 more. If your hair is Fine To normal to thick It should be the price they Quote u. When U sit down to get them that is when U need to ask on the price. Also Let her Know that U have colored your hair.


U do not need to wait to get hi lites done. U can get them done as soon as you want. If your hair is a little dry after you color it at home use a deep conditioner on it b 4 u go. Or if you do not have a deep conditioner u can put ur normal conditioner on and leave it on for about 30 min while u are watching tv or whatever.. If you need anymore help just ask.. I just got blonde highlights in my hair and I wanted it to be just a bit lighter blonde, so i was wondering.. there's this john frieda color glaze thing and it's supposed to enhance your hair color and make it shiner and brighter, or something like that. i just got my highlights today and i don't know when i can wash it? i got it done at the salon and my hair got bleached a little too, so what do you (experienced) people think? can i wash my hair tomarrow? and if i can, may i use this color glaze with it? here's a link to the color glaze page, so you could check it out:
