Hair Highlights?

I have very dark brown, almost black, virgin hair, and I want to get highlights. I want auburn/burgundy, something reddish-purplish. Would that be a good color? What would be a good brand for at-home highlighting, since salons are expensive and can be over $100?Hair Highlights?
Visit Sally's beauty supply and pick up a small pack of disposable frost caps and a pack of bouffant elastic baggies (to put on after applying color to help hold in heat for better processing). I would try Clairol Torrids for vivid color, and regular Clairol for a more natural shade. For levels 6 or above you can use a 40 volume developer for greater lift of your natural color, if desired; on lower levels, I would probably just use 20 volume, as those are darker shades and won't require additional lifting. Use a cream developer as this will make your color a thicker texture and less likely to bleed through under the cap (thus giving you spots at the base of your scalp). I think that will be a great color choice, light blonde is too much on very dark hair... unless you enjoy the alternative look, and then it can be quite striking.





EDITED; The above info is for somewhat subtle highlighting. If you are wanting screaming purple or pink highlights the hair must first be pre-bleached to a very light stage using an off the scalp powdered bleach (such as Clairol's Basic White) mixed with 40 volume creme developer. You must use a cap or foils with this product, it can't be applied to the scalp, this stuff will set you on fire, use gloves. The hair must be brought up to the palest of yellows to white, to achieve the neon shades. The secret to that is not removing the bleach until the desired level of color removal is there.The bleach must be kept moist to keep working, so if pulled through a cap it must be covered with a baggie. When doing this, a hooded dryer is very helpful to speed up processing time. If you see any definite orange or yellow DON';T remove the bleach, be patient and wait until the desired level is reached. When there, shampoo out well, condition, dry and apply Manic Panic in your desired shade to the pre-lightened areas and shampoo out after about 30 minutes. This formula is only for shocking, shout out highlighting. For a softer look use the first mentioned suggestion. I say this as your hair is so dark naturally. A person with light brown hair could get very natural results using powdered bleach, they can go lighter as their natural color is lighter, hence less contrast. Unless striving for super dramatic highlights, I would not recommend the bleaching, you don't need the extra lifting of bleach for a subtle reddish, burgandy, or eggplant effect.Hair Highlights?
You cannot get a good reddish-pupulish results at home, unless you happen to be gifted or a trained cosmotologist.





You would have to bleach your hair first, where you want the highlights and then do the color on it.





I highly suggest you go to a salon.





I got my highlights(I have the same hair color as you and got burgundy/red/wine highlights!) done at a beauty school for about $40, but of course I wouldn't suggest going to a beauty school unless you want to take a chance.





If you do chose to go to a beauty school to get them done, I suggest Marinello's Beauty School, and if not go to one where the instructors carefully watch the students as they work.

that sounds really pretty actually. a good brand is loreal or revlon. they both have duo haircolor/highlighting kits that work wonders.. i've used both and they always come out looking natural.. and just the way i want!

Ask for Halo highlights. I think that they look the best and most natural.





Halo Highlights are similar to face framing with various application techniques or one of the halo techniques make it look like there is a spotlight on your hair all the time by adding a ring of lighting around the head on the hair when the hair is parted a specific way.

How can you highlight your hair without using hair products and or a beautician? I really want strawberry blonde highlights in my hair but my parents wont let me put any highlights in my hair so thats why i am askingHair Highlights?
It depends on your hair color. You can use lemon juice and sit out in the sun with it for a while to lighten your hair and then rinse it out. but it may not turn strawberry blonde. It is just going to lighten what you already have.

I highlighted my hair yesterday. Through one of those caps that you pull the hair through. But its look funny. Like in some spots(on the same strand of hair) its like striped. Like blonde, brown, blonde, brown. Any clue why it looks like that?Hair highlighting?

Ouch! The bleach didn't work all-over or you didn't apply it all-over. It happened to me a little when my aunt was doing my dark roots. There are places in my hair(on the same strands) that are blonde and a splotch of black. You need to have a professional look at (and try to fix!) that. Good luck next time!
did u so this urself? well, it might have been that when whoever did ur hair, they twisted the strand, and then dyed it. when that happens, and let the twist down, u get stripes!!!!! i would suggest going 2 the walmart or target or sumthing, and buying ur own formula, the 1 that has a comb in it. the formula is blu, (they say on the package what color it will turn ur hair, and u want blonde, so get that, ive tryed it and it works REALLY well.) it only costs about $10-$20, depending on where u live, i live in south carolina, and it only costs $9. just do what it says on the box, and u got it!

Well it’s a newer technique, its really not named (at least not in my salon) but some girls have informally started to call it an “underweave”. Your best bet is to find a picture or tell your stylist what you want. This technique is gaining popularity so he / she will know what you are talking about. Also, be sure to show him / her how deep under the top layer you want it. if possible, show him / her by actually grabbing the upper section of your hair you want to remain darker, then let the stylist know how heavy you want the highlights. I ask my clients to tell me on a level one to 5; one being super natural and spaced blonde color. Three usually is standard highlights, and 5 being little to no dark, almost all blonde. This helps the stylist determine how low on the head to start the highlights, and how to space out the sections. Hope this helps!
